Ghosts, terror and atrocities have been related to and recorded ever since we can recall – by Artists, writers, poets, musicians, photographers and reporters.
some of the above – mentioned experienced it first hand, being victims themselves, others empathized and saw it as their mission to remind, warn, preserve and give voice to those who were tortured, lost, vanished,evaporated or were turned into ashes.
Ghosts never appear from nowhere. Ghosts are forever and always direct products of atrocities, racism, fanaticism and sheer injustice of sick minds.
The variety of means of expression and visualizations of GHOSTS have been as vast as all forms of atrocities and ghosts, most of which or the majority of which, have been screaming straight into our faces; at times too loud, sensational or genuinely trying to evoke our conscious and attention so as not to allow us to forget or forgive.
GHOSTS on too many occasions seem to appear in the aftermath of a major catastrophic even
Ghosts SEEM, ONLY SEEM, to us to be associated with silence, only because they – whoever THEY are, appear AFTER the big bang. however, ghosts are roaring and rolling like thunder: GHOSTS perpetuate the devastating effect of the preceding bang. ghosts seldom loosen their grip !

Seldom do we come across SILENCE AND STILLNESS as a reminder, or as a MORE powerful tool of presentation or persuasion.

Looking all across the “GHOSTS” monumental and remarkable body of work of Dana Arieli, one remains spellbound, speechless and as silent as she herself must have been and sensed while standing there at all those ghostly locations to which she so emotionally identified herself with.
Only an extremely and (almost) obsessive emotional urge made her undertake this holy and painful pilgrimage :
That, by freezing to complete silence, instances of the present mundane, seemingly casual nothingness of urban and harmless countryside to a chilling glance at the diabolic past context and memory.
She has noticed, observed and LISTENED to the ghosts as closely as possible while suppressing the more obvious and louder emotional reaction.
the angles she chose and her compositions are so drastic and poignant – so poetic and truly artistic.
i had to make tough choices:
personally i could not separate myself from my own visits and experiences at the following locations:
The closeup of the the platform of S-BAHNHOF of Grunewald, nor from the sterility and stillness of the DACHAU SERIES and the cross high up over looking the EAGEL’S NEST in the Bavarian alps: Only a few years ago i made a point of climbing up to that very spot. i stood there screaming silently – me, the little Jew and Israeli – “here i am , here and now, where as you bastard evaporated into the depths of hell”.

Dana Arieli just whispers and we stand still and listen very very carefully.
Her whispers are as loud as the SHOA of Claude Lanzmann, Primo Levi’s and Aharon Appelfld’s ouevre as well as Felix Nussbaum’s paintings.

Schon immer haben sich Künstler, Schriftsteller, Dichter, Musiker, Fotografen und Reporter auf Geister, Terror und Grausamkeiten bezogen. Einige der oben genannten erlebten es aus erster Hand, waren selbst Opfer, andere empfanden es als ihre Aufgabe, zu erinnern, zu warnen, zu bewahren und denjenigen Stimmen zu verleihen, die gefoltert, verloren, verschwunden, oder in Asche verwandelt sind.

Geister erscheinen nie aus dem Nichts. Geister sind immer direkte Folgen von Grausamkeiten, Rassismus, Fanatismus und schierer Ungerechtigkeiten kranker Köpfe.

Die Vielfalt der Ausdrucksmittel und Visualisierungen von Geistern war so groß wie alle Formen von Grausamkeiten und Geistern, von denen die meisten oder die Mehrheit direkt in unsere Gesichter geschrien haben; manchmal zu laut, sensationell oder aufrichtig bemüht, unser Bewusstsein und unsere Aufmerksamkeit zu wecken, sodass wir nicht vergessen oder vergeben. Allzu häufig erscheinen Geister als Nachwirkung eines schweren katastrophalen Ereignisses.

Geister scheinen, nur scheinen, für uns mit Stille verbunden zu sein, nur weil sie – wer auch immer sie sind – nach dem großen Knall erscheinen. Doch Geister tosen und rollen wie Donner: Geister verewigen die verheerende Wirkung des vorangegangenen Knalls. Geister lockern selten ihren Griff!

Selten dienen Ruhe und Stille als Erinnerung, oder als mächtigeres Werkzeug der Präsentation und Überzeugung.

Schaut man durch das monumentale und bemerkenswerte Werk Geister von Dana Arieli, so bleibt man gebannt, sprachlos und so stumm, wie sie selbst gewesen sein muss, als sie an all den geisterhaften Orten stand, mit denen sie sich emotional so identifizierte.

Nur ein extremer und (fast) obsessiver emotionaler Drang veranlasste sie, diese heilige und schmerzhafte Pilgerfahrt zu unternehmen: Durch Einfrieren bis zur völligen Stille geben Instanzen des heutigen Alltags, des scheinbar beiläufigen Nichts der urbanen und harmlosen Landschaften, einen eiskalten Blick auf den Kontext der diabolischen Vergangenheit und der Erinnerung.

Sie hat die Geister so genau wie möglich wahrgenommen, beobachtet und ihnen zugehört, und dabei die offensichtlichere und lautere emotionale Reaktion unterdrückt. Die gewählten Blickwinkel und Kompositionen sind so drastisch und ergreifend – so poetisch und wahrhaft künstlerisch.
Ich musste schwierige Entscheidungen treffen: Ich konnte mich nicht von meinen eigenen Besuchen und Erfahrungen der folgenden Orte trennen:
Weder vom Bahnsteig des S-Bahnhofs Grunewald, noch von der Sterilität und Stille der Dachau-Serie und dem Kreuz hoch über dem Kehlsteinhaus in den bayerischen Alpen. Erst vor einigen Jahren bin ich gezielt genau an diesen Ort hochgestiegen. Ich stand still schreiend da – ich, der kleine Jude und Israeli – „Hier bin ich, hier und jetzt, wo du Bastard in die Tiefen der Hölle verdunstet bist”.

Dana Arieli flüstert nur und wir stehen still und hören sehr genau zu. Ihr Flüstern ist so laut wie Schoah von Claude Lanzmann, wie das Werk von Primo Levi und Aharon Appelfeld und wie die Gemälde von Felix Nussbaum.

It’s all so quiet.
It’s all so quiet. Like the paralyzing stillness after an explosion, accompanied by a whirling, sharp whistle. Like the sound of sirens that makes everything stop. We all stand up, hiding the urge to smile out of embarrassment. Like the rustle of leaves trying to get back in order after a tree falls. It’s quiet. We are pacing quietly, the soles squeaking on the stones and the legs are trying to seek stability within this unthinkable aesthetic silence. Like a Zen Garden. A dry landscape. Like an ocean of small stones scattered across an endless plateau. So many stones. Millions. Leading to the horizon in an attempt to find a vanishing point between the distant trees. At the center of the dry garden – a rock. A liberation monument of the third generation, of the ones who wants to speak despite the silence, to live despite the fear, to escape without the need to hide. Like a black-and-white movie, it seems that reality was painted in grayscale. The stripes, the tin bowls, the dry bread, the numbers, the tone of an unhealthy skin, the fences, the stones. And only Spielberg’s girl running with her red Hollywood coat, like a laser pointer that shows everyone how much to get emotional and when to cry. A memorial site. A tourist attraction. Come in and be quiet. Honor and demand honor from others. Come in to make sure everyone is shocked. That everyone remembers to never forget. That everyone is empathic enough. That they are willing to forgive us for this ongoing post-traumatic behavior and to give us some more time to fully recover. At the age of 13, I visited Dachau with my father and his German wife. I remember nothing but the intense need and fear of entering the public toilets that were placed next to the abandoned gas chambers. A certain fear that they would lock me inside and would not ever let me out. Excuse me; are there any toilets near the souvenir shop?
שקט של אחרי.
כמו הדממה המשתקת שמגיעה אחרי פיצוץ, מלווה בצפצוף אוזניים על-קולי חד ומסחרר. כמו קנון הצפירה שכולם מתיישרים אליו, מנסים לכבוש צחוק של מבוכה. כמו רשרושי עלים מחרישים המנסים לחזור לסדר אחרי שעץ נופל. שקט. פוסעים בשקט, הסוליות חורקות על האבנים, הרגליים מנסות לחפש יציבות בשקט האסתטי הבלתי מתקבל על הדעת. כמו גן זן. גן נוף יבש. האבנים הקטנות ממשיכות עד אין קץ, פזורות במישור אוקיינוסי. המונים מהן. מיליונים. מובלות אל האופק בניסיון למצוא את נקודת המגוז. תחומות בצמרות עצים רחוקים ודלילים מדי להתחבא ביניהם. ובמרכז הגן – סלע. אנדרטה לשחרור הדור השלישי, זה שרוצה לדבר למרות השקט, לחיות למרות הפחד, לברוח בלי להתחבא. כמו סרט שחור-לבן, נדמה שהמציאות הייתה באפורים. הפסים, קערות הפח, הלחם היבש, המספר, עור הפנים חסר הוויטמינים, הגדרות, האבנים. ורק הילדה של שפילברג רצה במעיל הוליוודי אדום, כמו סמן לייזר שמראה לכולנו כמה להתרגש ומתי לבכות. אתר הנצחה. אתר תיירות. באים להיות בשקט. לתת כבוד ולדרוש אותו מאחרים. באים לוודא שכולם מזדעזעים. שכולם זוכרים כי אסור לשכוח. שכולם מכים על חטא, מצקצקים בלשון מלאה באמפתיה. מוכנים לסלוח לנו על התנהלות פוסט-טראומטית מתמשכת. נותנים לנו עוד קצת זמן להתאושש. בגיל 13 ביקרתי בדכאו עם אבי ואשתו הגרמניה. אינני זוכרת דבר מלבד צורך עז מלווה בפחד נורא להכנס לשירותים שמוקמו צמוד לתאי הגזים הנטושים. פחד אמִתי וברור, שיקלעו אותי בפנים ולא יתנו לי לצאת. סליחה, אולי מישהו יודע אם יש שירותים ציבוריים גם ליד חנות המזכרות?
