The Book of Names

Situated in the Jewish pavilion of the Auschwitz Museum, is a grand-scale project that took six decades to create. 4.2 million names of Jewish victims killed in the Holocaust are documented in it. De Lange’s studio, responsible for designing the exhibit, was asked to provide an original solution to a difficult challenge: how to illustrate the unfathomable number of the deceased? The enormous size of the book gives a concrete and graphic estimation.

It is built of 58 volumes, each containing 140 pages. In each page 500 names are listed. The book is two meters high and 14 meters in circumference. The photograph in front of us contains only a little of the book’s overall space. Its framing is not consistent or symmetric, and its borders are fluid. It captures the entire width of five volumes, and a portion of the width of two additional ones. Their height is not realized in the photograph. We can notice that the pages are turning yellow, while the color becomes even more yellowish in those pages that are more frequently flipped through by visitors. The widening gaps between specific pages is another aesthetic marker that makes the viewer wonder. Are family names that start with certain letters observed more than others? Can those graphic markers testify, even slightly, to the identities of family members who were able to reach the exhibit and touch the printed names of their loved ones?

What’s depicted in the photograph is reminiscent of the manner in which trees are dated by growth rings, carrying an enigmatic quality that requires previous knowledge. Even when we are able to identify what’s in the photograph, there’s still a level of deciphering to overcome: how do we read the signifier’s map of graphic elements in order to understand the incomprehensible dimensions of the signified?

Another photograph made by the same photographer, which creates a conceptual dialogue with this photograph, represents directly the sensual dimension of the exhibit, the way in which it allows visitors to touch the names of their loved ones. The personal and intimate touch, created through the meeting between the finger of the photographer’s son and the name of his grandfather on paper, is visualized while in the background a gentle line of illumination divides the pages. In the photograph in front of us there is no such illumination and no finger appears. Nonetheless, the entire photograph is an exact transcription of traces, a convoluted index for signs of usage, which testifies also to the phenomenological dimension of the exhibit.

״ספר השמות״, המוצב בביתן היהודי של מוזאון אושוויץ, הוא פרויקט רחב היקף שנמשך שישה עשורים, ובו מתועדים כ-4.2 מיליון משמות היהודים שנספו בשואה. סטודיו דה-לנגה, שהופקד על מלאכת עיצובו של המיצג, התבקש לתת מענה מקורי לאתגר הקשה שעמד בפניו: כיצד ממחישים את ממדיו הבלתי נתפסים של מספר הנספים? גודלו העצום של הספר מספק אומדן גרפי מוחשי.
הוא מורכב מ-58 כרכים, כשבכל כרך 140 דפים ובכל דף כ-500 שמות. גובהו של הספר הוא שני מטרים והיקפו 14 מטרים. התצלום שלפנינו מנסה להכיל מעט מהמרחב הכולל של ספר השמות. המסגור בו אינו אחיד או סימטרי, וגבולותיו נזילים. בתצלום לכודים חמישה כרכים שלמים בעוביים, אך לא בגובהם, ועוד מעט משני כרכים נוספים. הדפים מצהיבים, וגונם הופך צהבהב יותר ויותר ככל שמתקרבים למקומות שבהם, ככל הנראה, מעלעלים המבקרים יותר מבשאר. סימן אסתטי נוסף מעלה תהיות, והוא הרווחים המתעצמים בין דפים כלשהם לעומת אחרים. האם שמות משפחה המתחילים באות כלשהי זוכים להתבוננות יותר מאחרים? האם יש בסימנים הגרפיים כדי להעיד, ולו במעט, על זהותם של קרובי המשפחה שהצליחו להגיע למיצג כדי לראות ולגעת בשמות יקיריהם שנספו?
התצלום מזכיר את האופן שבו מבצעים תיארוך בעזרת טבעות גזע של עצים, ויש בו אניגמטיות הדורשת ידע מוקדם. אך גם כשמצליחים לזהות את מה שמצוי בתצלום, שאלת הפענוח נותרת בעינה: כיצד יש לקרוא את מפת המרכיבים הגרפיים של המסמן, כדי להבין את ממדיו הבלתי נתפסים של המסומן?
תצלום אחר של הצלמת, שיוצר דיאלוג רעיוני עם תצלום זה, מבקש לתת ביטוי ישיר לממד החושי של המיצג, לאופן שבו הוא מאפשר למבקרים לגעת בשמות יקיריהם שנספו. הנגיעה האישית והאינטימית, זו שנוצרת דרך המפגש בין אצבעו של בנה של הצלמת לבין השם של סבו על נייר הספר, נראית על רקע פס עדין של אור הבוקע מן הדפים. בתצלום שלפנינו פס האור אינו מופיע, ושום נגיעת אצבע אינה נראית. עם זאת, התצלום כולו הוא רישום מדויק של עקבות מגע, אינדקס מפותל של סימני שימוש, המעיד גם הוא על התפיסה הפנומנולוגית של המיצג.

My understanding of this photograph began with an error; a blind spot that momentary took over the interpretation. Encountering what at first glance looked like a freehand charcoal sketch, and at second glance like the documentation of etchings on a wooden wall, along with the title, Auschwitz 2015, I was immersed with the memory of a familiar dreadful image: The nail scratches made by Jewish Holocaust victims on the walls of the Nazi execution facility in Auschwitz; the last markings etched in wall, in a twist of death right before the departure of the soul, registering the hopeless instinct to cling to life, the traces of a struggle for impressing yet one more body print upon reality, before it slips away for eternity…

And I was wrong. Auschwitz 2015 is not about these markings. It is indeed a photograph of handprints; and indeed, it is full of death and futility, borne of the same planet Auschwitz inferno. But the essence of Dana Arieli’s photograph is different. It describes an item from one exhibit, The Book of Names, in the new permanent exhibition in Block 27 at the Auschwitz – Birkenau State Museum, designed by Chanan and Tal de Lange and curated by the Yad Vashem Institute. This exhibit responded to the need to commemorate 4.2 million Jewish Holocaust victims in the exhibition. It is made up of hundreds of pages compiled in fifty “books” that stand taller than man. They bear the names of all the Jewish victims, in alphabetical order, along with their place of birth and death. Each man, woman and child that were murdered in the Holocaust has a name in this monumental book of the dead. Visitors to the exhibition can look for names of relatives and acquaintances among the pages, point them out, touch and feel them. Depicted in the photograph are the stains of fat and sweat created, throughout the years, like in old used holy books, by the fingers of those who had scanned through the pages in search of a familiar name, of a person with whose memory they wished to unite, in order to tie the blood and flesh seeking body, with those whose past existence is today but a name. The darkest, most prominent concentration of marks can naturally be found where more hands have touched, around the more common family names.

Usually visitors in the exhibition look for names of family members who were murdered. The finger markings Dana photographed are the documentation of a sequence of search and identification activities, rummaging amongst personal, familial and communal memories, navigating within a tragic sphere of kinship. The Book of Names is a field of paper tombs and graves, canned memory tins. The book is testimony and the photograph is testimony. This is a photograph without mimesis, without fetishism, on the verge between photography and footprint, between documentation and indexicality.

These markings, which appear like an automatic sketch rash, are the prints of living bodies, like the sweat and fat stains on the Shroud of Turin; they are the surplus remnants of ordinarily a brief and impatient quest for a name, for the identification with it. If a question had a body this is how it would look like. We may say that Auschwitz 2015 is the photograph of a question.

But because these large books contain printed words, this is also a search within language. The printed language and text mediate between the living and the dead, and the finger prints are a type of writing, if involuntary, still such that may be counted among leaving a mark, staining and signing. And if the letters and words are latent within the Book of Names, then its photograph, with the hand prints of memory consumers who rummaged through its words, is that of the shell of language.

My spontaneous, erroneous, identification of the photograph’s subject, made me realize that the phantom series are types of visual riddles. These are possible meanings open to interpretation and reading. The phantom is not a complete object at which we look from “outside”, while it exists independently in reality and is thus caught on camera. The phantom is in the eye of the beholder. It is within us no less than it is part of objective, actual existence. When we strive to understand what we see in this series’ photographs, our questioning gaze echoes a set of stipulations, expectations, anxieties and conventions, and the phantom is in fact the result of an encounter between these and the photograph’s surface. The phantom is double and threefold – within ourselves, in the photograph and in the photographed reality. The imagined exceeds the viewed and the observed, and therefore we not only behold the documentation of the remnants of Nazi or Soviet culture when we look at the series’ photographs, but we also experience a different type of phantom, one more akin to phantom pain, which is the sensation of pain perceived at a missing part of an amputated organ. Real physical pain, which brings about suffering, but is also totally imagined.

יסודה של ראשית הבנתי את הצילום הזה הייתה בטעות; בנקודת עיוורון שהשתלטה להרף-עין על הפרשנות. המפגש עם מה שנראה במבט ראשון כרישום פחם חופשי ובמבט שני כתיעוד חריטות בקיר עץ – בצירוף הכותרת “אושוויץ, 2015”, הציף בי זיכרון של דימוי בלהות מוכר: שריטות ציפורני קורבנות השואה היהודים על-גבי קירות מתקן ההשמדה הנאצי באושוויץ; הסימנים האחרונים שנחרטו בקירות בעווית מוות לפני יציאת הנשמות, רישומו של יצר היאחזות חסרת סיכוי בחיים, עקבות המאבק להותרת עוד טביעת גוף במציאות לפני שהיא נשמטת לתמיד—
וטעיתי. לא בסימנים האלה מדובר. “אושוויץ, 2015” הוא אכן צילום של טביעות אצבעות ידיים והוא אכן רווי מוות וחוסר תוחלת, ופלנטת אושוויץ היא אמנם אותה התופת שילדה גם אותו – אבל עיקר הצילום של דנה אריאלי אחר. מה שמתואר בו הוא פרט מתוך מוצג אחד, “ספר השמות”, בתערוכת הקבע החדשה בבלוק 27 במוזיאון הממלכתי אושוויץ-בירקנאו בעיצוב חנן וטל דה לנגה ובאוצרות מוסד “יד ושם”. המוצג הזה ענה על הצורך להנציח בתצוגה את 4.2 מיליון הקורבנות היהודיים של השואה. הוא מורכב ממאות דפים מקובצים בכחמישים קונטרסים גדולים מקומת אדם. מודפסים עליהם שמות כל הנספים היהודים, בסדר אלפביתי, בציון מקום הלידה והמוות של כל אחד מהם. לכל איש, ואשה, ילד וילדה יהודים שנרצחו בשואה יש שם בספר המתים המונומנטלי הזה. המבקרים בתערוכה יכולים לחפש את שמות קרוביהם ומכריהם בין הדפים, להצביע עליהם, לגעת בהם ולחוש אותם. מה שרואים בצילום הם כתמי השומן והזיעה שהותירו במשך השנים אצבעותיהם של המעלעלים בקונטרסים הללו כדי למצוא שם מוכר ולהתייחד אתו, לקשור בין הגוף החי המחפש למי ששמו הוא שארית יחידה של קיומו בעבר. ריכוז הסימנים הכהים הצפוף והבולט יותר נמצא מטבע הדברים במקומות שבהם נגעו יותר ידיים, כלומר בדפי שמות המשפחה הנפוצים יותר.
בדרך-כלל מחפשים המבקרים בספרים הללו שבתערוכה את שמות בני משפחתם שנספו. סימני האצבעות שדנה צילמה הם תיעוד של רצף פעולות חיפוש וזיהוי, נבירה במעבה הזיכרון האישי, המשפחתי והקהילתי, ניווט במרחב שארות טראגי. ספר השמות הוא שדה קברים ומצבות נייר, קופסות שימורים של זיכרון. הספר הוא עדות והצילום הוא עדות. זהו צילום ללא מימזיס. ללא פטישיזם, על התפר בין צילום לעקבה.
הסימנים האלה הנראים כמו תפרחת רישום אוטומטי הם עקבות גופים חיים, כמו סימני הזיעה והשומן בתכריך ישו מטורינו; הם שאריות עודפות של פעילות חיפוש מהירה ובדרך-כלל קיצרת-רוח להגיע אל השם הרצוי, להזדהות אתו. אם לשאלה היה גוף הוא היה נראה כך. ואפשר לומר ש”אושוויץ, 2005″ הוא צילום של שאלה.
אבל מכיוון שהקונטרסים מכילים מילים מודפסות זהו גם חיפוש בתוך השפה. השפה והטקסט המודפס מתווכים בין החיים למתים וסימני האצבעות הם סוג של כתיבה, לא רצונית אמנם, אבל כזאת שמשתייכת למשפחת השארת הסימן, ההכתמה וההחתמה. ואם האותיות והמילים הן החבויות בתוך “ספר השמות” הרי שהצילום שלו, עם טביעות ידי צרכני הזיכרון שנברו בין המילים, הוא צילום של קליפת השפה.
הזיהוי הספונטני המוטעה שלי את נושא הצילום, גרם לי להבין שצילומי סדרת הפנטומים הם סוג של חידות חזותיות. אלה אפשרויות משמעות פתוחות לפענוח ולפרשנות. הפנטום אינו אובייקט שלם שאנו מביטים בו “מבחוץ” והוא מתקיים לכשעצמו במציאות וכך קולטת אותו המצלמה. הפנטום הוא בעיני המתבונן. הוא בתוכנו לא פחות משהוא חלק מן הקיום האובייקטיבי והממשי. כשאנחנו מנסים להבין מה אנו רואים בצילומי הסדרה הזאת מהדהדת במבט השואל שלנו מערכת של התנאות, ציפיות, חרדות ומוסכמות והפנטום הוא בעצם תוצאת המפגש בין המערכת הזאת לפני שטח הצילום. הפנטום הוא כפול ומשולש– זה שבתוכנו וזה שבצילום וזה שבמציאות המצולמת. רב המדומיין על הנראה והנצפה ולכן לא רק תיעוד של שרידי תרבות חומרית נאצית או סובייטית אנחנו רואים כשאנחנו מביטים בצילומי הסדרה אלא חווים פנטום מסוג אחר, דומה יותר לכְּאֵב רְפָאִים (הנקרא גם “כְּאֵב פַנְטוֹם”) המוגדר כתחושת כאב הנתפסת בחלק החסר של איבר קטוע. כאב פיסי ממשי ומחולל סבל אבל גם לגמרי מדומיין.

How can we connect the generations?
why nobody remembers and knows where to look for answers? There were people who were lost and gave up. When I look at this photo I can not help but think only about the pages which were not used so far. I realise that some names in this “book” have never read and have never been found. Those are not just names – it is people who were forgotten. Nobody morned for them, because nobody survived. It makes me angry and weak. I do not what to believe that somebody cut a “thread of life” – these were people who lived. they can not be left in the past forever. I have found in the book the surname that I carry now. For a moment I was scared because I have never asked my family about the Holocaust and if we had members of the family who were victims. Now I will keep in my mind the names I saw there. I will remember.

Each of the names was a whole life of a person. The person had a story of a whole family. On the book of names we see nothing but people’s memory. Just name and nothing about the experience of that person. in the book there are only names. they are memory of a horrible past. After few hudrends years probably no one could recognise each name on the book.
but here countless memories of each suffering were gathered together.

This picture reminds me of disappearing Jewish Culture in Poland because of the Holocaust. Before must of the Jewish heritage, such as fir example the Synagogues, were central but today there is a lack of Jewish Culture. We, Polish People, know that the Jewish Culture is not as vivid as it was before. It is the time that we are celebrating here the Jewish Festival but it is a poor substitute for Judaism which flourished in Poland.

W pawilonie żydowskim Państwowego Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau znajduje się księga, która powstaje od sześciu dekad w ramach zakrojonego na wielką skalę projektu. Zawiera prawie 4,2 miliona nazwisk żydowskich ofiar Holokaustu. Zadanie przygotowania wystawy, której jest częścią, powierzono studiu De Lange. Postawiono przed nim tym samym wielkie wyzwanie: jak ukazać tę niewyobrażalną liczbę ofiar? Rozmiary księgi w namacalny i wizualny sposób pomagają nam się w tym zorientować.
Składa się ona z 58 tomów, z których każdy zawiera 140 stron. Na każdej z nich umieszczono 500 nazwisk. Księga ma dwa metry wysokości i ponad 14 metrów długości. Prezentowane zdjęcie przedstawia jedynie niewielki jej wycinek. Sprawia wrażenie przypadkowego i niesymetrycznego, nie ma wyraźnych krawędzi. Ukazuje pięć tomów w całości i po fragmencie dwóch kolejnych. Nie widać wysokości księgi. Można zauważyć, że papier zaczyna żółknąć, przede wszystkim na tych stronach, które odwiedzający najczęściej przekładają. Szersze odstępy między niektórymi stronami skłaniają widza do refleksji: czy częściej szuka się nazwisk rozpoczynających się na określone litery? Czy te wizualne ślady mówią nam coś – cokolwiek – o tożsamości członków rodzin, którym udało się dotrzeć na wystawę i dotknąć wydrukowanych nazwisk swoich bliskich?
Zdjęcie przywodzi na myśl metodę datowania wieku drzewa na podstawie liczby jego pierścieni. Ma więc w sobie coś zagadkowego, wymaga od widza pewnej wiedzy. Nawet jeśli zdaje sobie on sprawę, co znajduje się na fotografii, to i tak musi zmierzyć się z kolejną zagadką i odnaleźć się pośród elementów graficznych, aby objąć rozumem niepojęte wymiary ich znaczeń.
Z pracą tą koncepcyjnie nawiązuje dialog inne zdjęcie Dany Arieli. W bezpośredni sposób uwidacznia ono emocjonalny wymiar wystawy, na której odwiedzający mogą dotknąć nazwisk swoich bliskich. Utrwala moment osobistego, bezpośredniego kontaktu, nawiązanego w momencie, kiedy palec syna autorki styka się z nazwiskiem jego dziadka na papierze rozjaśnionym linią subtelnego światła rozdzielającą strony. Na fotografii przed nami nie ma ani światła, ani palca, a mimo to zawiera ona w sobie zapis obecności, sugestywne ślady aktywności użytkownika jednoznacznie poświadczające nadzwyczajny wymiar tej wystawy.
