It was 5 a.m. as I awakened, overcome by a vague feeling of urgency. It took a few seconds for me to realize what it was, that woke me up. I sat at my desk, and looked at Dana’s photograph again.
In the photograph within the photograph, at the bottom left corner, two minute figures are looking at a building. Who are they? Are they aware of just how small they are, of their location at the margins of the frame, of them serving as a scale to demonstrate the proportions of the stone and concrete structure?
Above this massive building tiny letters drop like rain. They flow down, creeping under the building’s foundations (as I was writing this in March 2016, I did not know Berlin as well as I do today. I imagined it as an ever-rainy city and thought it took a special effort to capture the building on such a sunny day. Not knowing how wonderfully clear and brilliant Berlin can be, I believed this rain of letters is a hint to some truth about the city).
On the left-hand side of Dana’s photograph, the letters are scattered around. It looks like an illustration for dyslexia. I focus my gaze on the letters as they escape the lines. The attempt to read becomes a game of filling the gaps, in which the content of the text becomes secondary to the success or failure of the deciphering act.
I am trying to read but the language disintegrates, failing its function as a tool for conveying meaning. The sign itself, it seems, deliberately undermines my attempt to understand what it says. It demands that I regard it as an object that stands in its own right, not as a reference to anything else.
I realize that I enjoy looking at the picture. I see in it a chaotic, provocative beauty. The scattered letters look like a naive prank, an exercise in rule-breaking. They remind me of magnetic letters on the refrigerator door, my sister and I used to play with when we were little girls.
The letters are falling. This is not mere neglect, as if saying: “We had every intention to provide a truthful testimony. We do not renounce the past. On the contrary, we went into the effort of informing, we put on a sign. But time takes its toll, and we are so busy, we no longer pause and read, so we did not notice. Thank you so much for bringing this oversight to our attention, this issue will be rectified as soon as possible”. No, something else is at work here. Dana’s photograph reveals an inherent discrepancy: telling and hiding, remembering and forgetting. The picture freezes the sign in the midst of a metamorphosis, in which it is becoming a sign that means “here should be a sign”. This is a phantom of a phantom, a meta-phantom.
A blurry wall appears behind the sign. I do not know whether this wall belongs to the building in the picture on the sign, or to another building that was built over its ruins (are there transparent commemoration signs for missing buildings, for places that are no longer?). Language, we have learned, is a tool in constructing collective memory. What about nonlinguistic structures, physical structures, such as buildings, streets and city squares? Do we remember whithin the physical realm as we remember in the realm of linguistic meaning? Can a collective memory, one that is not mediated by words, even exist? Maybe both are but mere fiction. Maybe memory cannot be un-personal. Maybe memory is not at all the right concept here.
The sign extends beyond the edges of Dana’s photograph. To whom is it addressed? The text is written in English. Is there alongside it a German text? I suppose there is. And I ask myself if indeed I thought once that evil has its own language, and what had changed in me, that I do not think so anymore.

בשעה חמש בבוקר התעוררתי בתחושת דחיפות מעורפלת. חלפו שניות מספר עד שהבנתי מה היה הדבר שטרד את שנתי. באור החיוור התיישבתי לשולחן על מנת להסתכל שוב בתצלום.
בפינה השמאלית התחתונה של התצלום שבתוך התצלום, שתי דמויות זעירות מתבוננות במבנה. מיהם המתבוננים? האם הם חשים בקטנותם, במיקומם בשולי הפריים, בהיותם אמצעי בלבד להמחשת קנה המידה של הבטון והאבן? מעל המבנה אדיר הממדים שתצלומו התכלכל מודפס על השלט, האותיות הקטנות נופלות כמו גשם. הן מחלחלות מתחתיו אל היסודות (בברלין הגשומה, המבנה צולם דווקא ביום שטוף שמש. גשם האותיות נדמה כמו תיקון בדיעבד של הסתרת עובדה זו).
אופן התפזרות האותיות בחלק השמאלי של התצלום נראה כמו אילוסטרציה לדיסלקציה. אני מרכזת את מבטי באותיות הבורחות מן השורות. הניסיון לקרוא הופך למשחק השלמת פערים. תוכנו של הכתוב נדחק הצִדה; באותו רגע הוא חשוב פחות מהצלחה או כישלון בפענוח את המילים. אני מנסה לקרוא, אך השפה מתפרקת. היא מועלת בתפקידה ומסרבת למסור את המשמעות שאותו מאן דהוא שכתב את השלט ביקש להעביר באמצעותה. השלט עצמו, כך נדמה, עושה מאמצים מכוונים לשים לאַל את הניסיון שלי לקרוא, להבין. הוא דורש שאתמקד בו כאובייקט בפני עצמו ולא כסמל לדבר אחר.
אני מגלה שאני נהנית להסתכל בתצלום השלט. הוא מזכיר לי קולאז׳ דאדא: אני מוצאת בו יופי מתריס, כאוטי (והלוא האקראיות שבשלט המופיע בתצלום היא אמִתית). האותיות המפוזרות נראות כמו תעלול תמים, תרגיל בפריעת סדר. הן מזכירות לי את האותיות המגנטיות שהרכבנו מהן מילים על דלת המקרר כשהיינו ילדות.
האותיות נופלות. זה אינו רק מצג של התפוררות בשל הזנחה שגרתית, בבחינת “רצינו להשאיר עדות. איננו מתכחשים לעבר. להפך: טרחנו והתאמצנו ליידע. ולראיה – הצבנו שלט. אבל הזמן עושה את שלו, ואנחנו עסוקים כל כך, ובכלל כבר הפסקנו לעצור ולקרוא, ופשוט לא שמנו לב. תודה על שהפניתם את תשומת ליבנו לעניין, התקלה תתוקן בהקדם” – יש כאן משהו אחר. תצלום השלט מציג דבר והיפוכו בה-בעת: מסירה והסתרה, זיכרון ושכחה. הוא מקפיא את השלט בעיצומו של תהליך מטמורפוזה שבו הוא הופך לסימן שמשמעותו “כאן צריך להיות סימן”.
זה פנטום של פנטום. מטא-פנטום.
מאחורי השלט ניבט קיר לא-ממוקד. איני יודעת אם הקיר שייך לאותו המבנה מן התצלום התכלכל שבשלט – הרי חלקים נרחבים של ברלין הופגזו ונכתשו לאבק בהפצצות בעלות הברית – או למבנה אחר שהוקם על חורבותיו (האם הוצבו שלטי הנצחה שקופה למבנים נעדרים, למקומות שאינם עוד?). הלשון, כך למדנו, היא כלי המכונן את זיכרון הקולקטיבי. אך מה בדבר מבנים לא-לשוניים, מבנים פיזיים – בניינים, רחובות, כיכרות? האם אנו זוכרים במרחב הפיזי כשם שאנו זוכרים במרחב המשמעות המושגית? ובאיזה אופן? האם יכול להתקיים זיכרון קולקטיבי, לא-אישי, שאינו מתווך במילים מבארות, מסבירות, מתארות? ואולי גם זה וגם זה אינם אלא בדיה: אולי זיכרון אינו יכול להיות בלתי-אישי. אולי זיכרון הוא כלל לא מושג מתאים כאן.
למי פונה השלט? השלט שבתצלום חורג מגבולות הפריים. הטקסט כתוב באנגלית – האם יש לצדו טקסט בגרמנית? אני מניחה שיש. ואני שואלת את עצמי אם אכן פעם חשבתי שלרוע יש שפה משלו, ומה השתנה בי מאז, שאיני חושבת כך עוד.
