The buttons’ color scheme in Dana Arieli’s photograph at the German Conservation Laboratory in Buchenwald is very limited: white / khaki – beige / olive green / black. Most are plastic and of minimalistic structure, with four sewing holes. The functional morphology correlates with the mass-manufacturing features, characteristic of the era, and set in the war economy, which called for frugal use of raw materials and efficient production. These data indicate that the buttons were manufactured in bulk. Their colors and simple “functionality” (sewing, maintenance) – perhaps tie them to uniform production. In the frame, these buttons appear bundled and classified alongside buckles and other connecting parts of clothing or footwear. Placed in tin boxes which were probably previously used for military food items or ammunition. Near the buttons, the edges of clothes racks and rusty tools are evident. Perhaps these were also categorized as being related to a sewing workshop or handling the attire of soldiers who served in the Camp.

Thus, these buttons were touched – stitched, reinforced, buttoned and unbuttoned – by Nazi soldiers. These are not the buttons that were used by the Camps’ victims, perhaps taken from their garments, used by their killers. Their origins cannot be ascertained, in light of their evident diversity. Indeed, they seem completely sterile, reminiscent of nothing but the era; they carry not even the slightest testimony of the methodological killing that took place, or the enormous suffering their wearers have brought about.

But a button has something so human . In its small size, a reminder of the garment it served; the simple, but highly experienced knowledge and dexterity required to sew it with a needle and thread; its proportions, incredibly suitable for holding between two fingers, which push it through the correct loop. It is a garment’s interface. It is meaningless without the garment, just like a garment without a body is just a hanging piece of cloth.

Buttoning and unbuttoning is one of the first complex independent motoric activities children undertake, and perhaps, also among the last they engaged in their youth.

צבעוניות הכפתורים בתצלום של דנה אריאלי במעבדת שימור הפריטים הגרמניים בבוכנוולד היא בקשת צבעים מצומצמת: לבן/חאקי-בז׳/ירוק-זית/שחור. רובם בעלי מבנה מינימלי שנוצק בפלסטיק, עם ארבעה חורים לתפירה. המורפולוגיה הפונקציונלית תואמת את אופי הייצור ההמוני שהיה באותן השנים לנוכח כלכלת המלחמה, שתבעה חיסכון בחומר וייעול תהליכים. נתונים אלו מעידים על שיוכם של הכפתורים, כנראה, לפריטי לבוש שיוצרו בסדרות גדולות. לפי צבעיהם ופשטות ״תפעולם״ (תפירתם, תחזוקתם) – אולי למדים. בפריים נראים הכפתורים צרורים וממוינים לצד אבזמים וחלקי חיבור אחרים לבגדים או לנעליים. הם מונחים בקופסאות פח שלפני כן שימשו, כנראה, למזון צבאי או לתחמושת. לצד הכפתורים נראים גם קצותיהם של מתלה לבגדים וחלקי כלי עבודה חלודים. ייתכן שאלו מוינו בהתייחס לסדנת תפירה או לטיפול בחלקי לבוש של החיילים שששירתו במחנה. כך, בכפתורים אלו נגעו – תפרו, חיזקו, פרמו ורכסו – חיילים נאצים. אלו אינם כפתורים ששימשו את הנרצחים במחנות, אולי רק הוסרו מבגדיהם ולאחר מכן עברו לשימוש רוצחיהם. אין לדעת בביטחון את מקורם, לאור הגיוון שקיים במה שנראה כאן לעין. ואכן, מה שנראה כאן מסורס לחלוטין ואינו מאזכר אלא את התקופה. אין בו ולו במידה הקטנה ביותר עדות לרצח השיטתי שהתקיים או לסבל הרב שגרמו עונדיו. ודווקא בכפתור יש משהו אנושי כל כך. במידתו הקטנה, בתזכורת שהוא טומן בחובו לבגד ששימש; לידע הפשוט אך עתיר הניסיון ולמוטוריקה העדינה שנדרשת על מנת לחברו בחוט ומחט; לממדיו המתאימים להפליא לאחיזה בשתי אצבעות, הדוחפות אותו ללולאה המתאימה. הוא ה״ממשק״ לבגד. אין לו קיום בלעדיו – וכמוהו גם הבגד ללא הגוף הוא כפיסת בד שמוטה. רכיסת כפתור ופרימתו היא גם אחת הפעולות העצמאיות המתוחכמות הראשונות שילדים עושים, ואולי גם בין האחרונות שיעשו בדמי ימיהם.
