Mother and daughter – a moment of intimacy and support. The elderly mom leans against the shoulder of her daughter, while they both watch a display in a light box. A stranger – the photographer – represents this family moment in a family picture. The image’s title – Auschwitz, September 2015 – leaves its impact and adds meaning. What at first appears a simple moment of intimacy evinces different meaning once the image’s title is known. The image no longer portrays an ordinary interaction between mother and her child; it also holds an association to one of mankind’s worst experiences.
I choose this image because it demonstrates the value that family photography can offer the public. Though the image captures a private family moment, at the same time it sparks a memory that is relevant to all of us. The photographer recognized that this sight is more than a private interaction – it is also a commemoration of a shared sorrow. We do not even see what the mother and daughter are observing. We do not need to. We know.

To pity, to envy, to regret, to rejoice

To pity
My mother was not with her mother in Auschwitz.
It’s not that my mother wasn’t in Auschwitz. In fact, she was in Auschwitz (as well as in other eight concentration camps), but her mother wasn’t with her in Auschwitz. She was sent to Sobibór. Needless to say, she did not get out of there to join her daughter and pay a visit to Auschwitz, or anywhere else.

To envy
My mother was not with me in Auschwitz.
She got out of there and surgically removed the number on her hand. She smiled to the world, and whenever she was asked about the past she told only of the good – of what was in Amsterdam before and after the War, when she returned and found out… she was alone. She hated discussing the Holocaust. Hated hearing about Auschwitz. Or talking about Auschwitz.

To regret
I cannot tell my children my mother’s story from Auschwitz. I don’t know it. I have never heard it. The stories were erased together with the number. I suppose the memories were not erased. In fact, since her death, as the years go by, I am certain they were not erased. They just died with her.

To rejoice
I was not with my daughter in Auschwitz.
She was there with her friends and her teachers. I did not go with her because I cannot. But I go with her to other places. That tell other stories. And when we stand thus, facing a drawing in a museum, my mother, who taught me so much about art and about joy, is there with us.

Mitleid, Neid, Bedauern, Freude

Mitleid
Meine Mutter war nicht mit ihrer Mutter in Auschwitz.
Es ist nicht so, dass meine Mutter nicht in Auschwitz war. Sie war in der Tat in Auschwitz (wie auch in acht anderen Konzentrationslagern), doch ihre Mutter war nicht mit ihr in Auschwitz. Sie wurde nach Sobibór geschickt. Natürlich kam sie dort nicht heraus, um sich ihrer Tochter anzuschließen und Auschwitz oder anderswo einen Besuch abzustatten.

Neid
Meine Mutter war nicht mit mir in Auschwitz.
Sie kam frei und entfernte chirurgisch die Nummer auf ihrer Hand. Sie lächelte der Welt zu und wenn sie nach der Vergangenheit gefragt wurde, erzählte sie nur von den guten Dingen – vom Amsterdam vor und nach dem Krieg, als sie zurückkehrte und … dass sie allein war. Sie hasste es, über den Holocaust zu reden. Sie hasste es, von Auschwitz zu hören. Oder über Auschwitz reden.

Bedauern

Ich kann meinen Kindern nicht die Geschichte meiner Mutter aus Auschwitz erzählen. Ich kenne sie nicht. Ich habe sie noch nie gehört. Die Geschichten wurden zusammen mit der Nummer ausradiert. Ich glaube aber die Erinnerungen wurden nicht gelöscht. Seit ihrem Tod bin ich sicher, dass sie nicht gelöscht wurden. Sie sind mit ihr gestorben.

Freude
Ich war nicht mit meiner Tochter in Auschwitz. Sie war dort mit ihren Freunden und ihren Lehrern. Ich bin nicht mit ihr hingegangen, weil ich es nicht kann. Aber ich gehe mit ihr an andere Orte. Die andere Geschichten erzählen. Und wenn wir so da stehen und eine Zeichnung in einem Museum anschauen, ist meine Mutter, die mir so viel über Kunst und über Freude beigebracht hat, mit uns dort.

 כשהבטתי בכל התצלומים חשתי אי-נוחות, תחושה של ריקנות וקור, כאילו משהו מסתורי ונסתר ניצב שם מאחוריי … הייתה גם הרגשת אפסות מול אלמנטים עצומים בגודלם ובכובדם, אך עם זאת חשתי גם את העוצמה שהם מקרינים. בחרתי דווקא את התצלום שבו נראות שתי דמויות נשיות מצולמות מאחור, מתבוננות בוויטרינה, בתוך חלל ריק. רק הדלת הצדדית המרומזת מעידה על כך שהחלל הוא אולי חדר. הדמויות האנונימיות (המצולמות מאחור) נראות כמו אימא ובת, עומדות קרוב ונתמכות זו בזו. מחד גיסא, המראה הזה נגע ללבי עד דמעות בהיותו אנושי מאוד, מינימליסטי, כשזווית הצילום ממקדת את הדמויות במרכז הריק שמסביב ותאורת הוויטרינה יוצרת מעין הילה הפוכה. מאידך גיסא, דווקא בשל כל מה שציינתי יש בתצלום עוצמה אחרת; לא הקור הקורן משאר התצלומים – אלא עוצמה רגשית של חום, של קרבה, של תמיכה, של ביחד .  המילה “אושוויץ” מעל התצלום העלתה גם את משמעות ההישרדות, כמובן, מתוקף היותי דור שני לניצולי השואה, העוסקת זה שנים רבות כמשמרת נייר של חומרים מתקופת השואה.

לרחם .
אימא שלי לא הייתה עם אימא שלה באושוויץ.  זה לא שאימא שלי לא הייתה באושוויץ. היא דווקא כן הייתה באושוויץ, אלא שאימא שלה לא הייתה אִתה באושוויץ. אותה שלחו לסוביבור. מובן שהיא לא יצאה משם על מנת לחבור לבִתה ולבקר מתישהו באושוויץ. או בכל מקום אחר.

לקנא.
אימא שלי לא הייתה אתי באושוויץ.  היא יצאה משם והסירה בניתוח את המספר מהיד. היא חייכה אל העולם, וכל אימת שנשאלה על העבר סיפרה רק על הטוב – על מה שהיה באמסטרדם לפני המלחמה ולאחריה, כשחזרה אליה לגלות ש…היא לבדה. היא שנאה את העיסוק בשואה. שנאה לשמוע על אושוויץ. או לדבר על אושוויץ.

להצטער.
את הסיפור של אימא שלי באושוויץ אני לא יכולה לספר לילדים שלי.  אני לא מכירה אותו. מעולם לא שמעתי אותו. עם המספר נמחקו הסיפורים. אני מניחה שהזיכרונות לא נמחקו. למעשה, ככל שנוקפות השנים מאז שהיא מתה, אני בטוחה שהם לא נמחקו. הם פשוט מתו אִתה.

לשמוח.
לא הייתי עם הילדה שלי באושוויץ.  היא הייתה שם עם החברים שלה והמורים שלה. לא נסעתי אִתה כי אני לא מסוגלת. אבל אני נוסעת אִתה למקומות אחרים. שמספרים סיפורים אחרים. וכשאנחנו עומדות כך מול תמונה במוזאון, אימא שלי, שלימדה אותי כל כך הרבה על אמנות, נמצאת אתנו.

Współczucie, zazdrość, ubolewanie, radość

Współczucie

Moja matka nie była w Auschwitz ze swoją matką.
Nie dlatego jednak, że nie była w Auschwitz. Była w Auschwitz (a także w ośmiu innych obozach koncentracyjnych), ale matki tam z nią nie było. Jej matka trafiła do Sobiboru. Nie trzeba chyba dodawać, że nigdy stamtąd nie wyszła, żeby się ponownie spotkać ze swoją córką – żeby ją odwiedzić w Auschwitz albo gdziekolwiek indziej.

Zazdrość

Moja matka nie była w Auschwitz ze mną.
Po opuszczeniu obozu chirurgicznie usunęła sobie numer z ręki. Uśmiechała się do świata, a gdy ją pytałam o przeszłość, opowiadała mi tylko dobre rzeczy – o Amsterdamie sprzed wojny i o tym, jak tam wróciła po niej… i była zupełnie sama. Nie chciała rozmawiać o Holokauście. Nie chciała słuchać o Auschwitz. Nie chciała też wspominać Auschwitz.

Ubolewanie

Nie mogę opowiedzieć moim dzieciom, co moja matka przeżyła w Auschwitz, bo nie wiem. Nigdy tej historii nie słyszałam. Opowieści zniknęły razem z numerem obozowym. Przypuszczam, że wspomnienia nie zniknęły. Od śmierci mojej matki mijają kolejne lata, a ja się utwierdzam w przekonaniu, że wspomnienia nie zniknęły. Że po prostu umarły razem z nią.

Radość

Nie byłam w Auschwitz z moją córką.
Ona tam pojechała z kolegami i nauczycielami. Nie pojechałam z nią, bo nie mogę tego zrobić. Jeżdżę z nią jednak w inne miejsca. Opowiadam jej inne historie. A gdy tam stoimy i wpatrujemy się w jakiś rysunek w muzeum, jest z nami moja matka, która tak wiele nauczyła mnie o sztuce i o radości.

Doktor Naomi Meiri-Dann jest historyczką sztuki i badaczką kultury wizualnej, a przy tym wnuczką Lucie Löwenstein-Zuckerberg (której nie dane jej było poznać) i córką Lore Zuckerberg-Dann (z którą nie dane jej było spędzić wystarczająco dużo czasu).
